On April 18th, we held the Corporation\u2019s annual meeting. We would like to take a moment today to once again thank the departing administrators, Phil Fait and \u00c9tienne Fallu, for their years of services on the board. We also would like to officially present to you the 2023-2024 board of administrators: Nour Saad\u00e9 (president), Mariann Onofrio (treasurer), Sonia Adhami (secretary), Amy Barrette, Jennifer Langlois, Julie Morin and Marya Phan. President’s Corner : Presentation<\/h2>\n

Dear Member,<\/em><\/p>\n

With the summer now officially under way, many athletic therapists enter a slightly calmer time during which I hope they can take some time for themselves. For those who are not getting as much rest in, we still hope you get nice weather for your outdoor activities.<\/p>\n

I am very proud to begin my first term as CTSQ\u2019s President. My main objectives will be to keep prioritizing the road to obtaining an order and provincial licensing, to support initiatives to help grow the profession and expand our work opportunities, and to ensure that we keep increasing the public knowledge of our profession and title.<\/p>\n

As you all know, our profession is pursuing its recognition and expansion across the province and the success of these initiatives are dear to all our hearts. I would like to inform you that I have already begun working towards the pursuit of these elements by ensuring that I pick right back up where our previous board and president left the ball rolling. I have therefore already met with the strategic development committee. I also began planning and attending key meetings, which I will continue doing throughout the summer, with external resources and governmental representatives who collaborate on these developments with us, such as Coll\u00e8ge des m\u00e9decins<\/em> et Office des professions du Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>. I will make sure that the CTSQ will keep all of our members informed on any progressions as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

For now I would like to highlight the great work done by those before I came. I can already appreciate the efforts they have put in and still put in to ensure that we all reach our objectives as a corporation. I would also like to officially congratulate the latest inductee to the CTSQ hall of fame Philippe Fait, for this great recognition.<\/p>\n

Important CEU Changes within CATA
\nWhen the decisions do not match the intent<\/h2>\n

In the CATA\u2019s May newsletter, changes about CEU attribution were shared to the members. Amongst these changes, the CATA voted to abolish CEUs for participation within a non-CATA board or committee and for non-CATA meetings, which thus targets provincial associations.<\/p>\n

According to the CATA, \u00ab [t]hese revisions will ensure that members are properly rewarded for their time, while also promoting continued learning and growth as a Certified Athletic Therapist \u00bb. When reading this statement, I cannot stop questioning the logic of it all. How is sitting on a provincial board not \u00ab promoting continued learning and growth \u00bb of both the professional and the profession? Considering that provincial associations and the CATA are working on different fronts, should the time and effort provided by athletic therapists at the provincial level not be worthy of some recognition and be seen as beneficial to the profession as well? Especially keeping in mind that, amidst the chaos that we have been through for the past two years, the CATA confirmed to us several times that they would not take over the work for professional recognition in Quebec. This recognition is certainly the most important element achievable for the growth of the profession at this point and yet, the CATA does deem valid rewarding the members working on the matter. This makes no sense to me! I have similar reflections with regards to the work of the committees. The concussion committee, for instance, undertakes an assignment that the CATA does not even focus on. If CATA\u2019s directors really had the best interest of athletic therapists at heart, they would recognize work such as the one accomplished by our experts when they are producing the Concussion Guidelines (a document that has been recognized in the past by the government of Quebec). However, when one is reading the CATA\u2019s update, awarding CEUs for this kind of initiative would not be \u00ab properly reward[ing] their time, while also promoting continued learning and growth as a Certified Athletic Therapist \u00bb. Can someone explain their rational to me?<\/p>\n

Provincial associations set aside; what about the work achieved by athletic therapists sitting on expert committees outside of the CATA? Do they not deserve being rewarded for their time and involvement? I have in mind a few examples of times where athletic therapists were invited to sit on governmental initiatives or national projects. The presence of these individuals in these settings contribute to the notoriety and reach of our profession. Am I wrong? Do you not think their work would deserve a few CEUs at the least? How are these initiatives less valuable to the growth of a professional than a weekend long course? In my opinion, sitting on a committee of experts is a greater opportunity for growth for a professional. According to the CATA\u2019s rational however, an athletic therapist signing up for any course deserves more \u00ab reward \u00bb. It is, to me, totally illogical when looking at the objective behind continuing education. Given that our professionals contribute a lot of their time to their work, I would be more than happy to see the extra time they attribute to being involved on a governmental committee, for example, being recognized at least as much as the extra time they put following an extracurricular course.<\/p>\n

For the past 2 years, the CATA has constantly been taking decisions that seem detrimental to the growth of our profession. This new politic confirms their total lack of understanding of the real challenges that athletic therapists face. The directors mention that they are willing to work with provincial association, yet they do not deem valuable to reward the individuals volunteering for said associations. Their self-centeredness is not new to me, but it feels like they are not even trying to disguise it anymore, which makes their actions even more questionable. Maybe their motives are financial, as they are looking to increase their revenue from course accreditation? Maybe all they really want is total control over the profession? From my standpoint, I am still waiting for answers.<\/p>\n

If, just like me, you think that the CATA\u2019s most recent decision is going against the growth of the profession, I encourage you to come forward as well and send them an email and let them know your opinion. The CTSQ is sharing here a pre-written message that you can use and modify as you like. We recommend that you all keep a close look at the CATA\u2019s developments and to keep questioning the rationale behind their actions. It is your duty as a member to assist in keeping your association on track.<\/p>\n

Hello to all CTSQ’s members,<\/p>\n

As you might already know, the first batch of UQTR Master\u2019s students started their journey last Fall. With the help or the department, we are already working hard to offer the following cohort a rich learning experience.<\/p>\n

With the transition from the DESS to the professional Master\u2019s, our groups went from 16 students per year to 25 students for two years. In order to give a favourable learning environment, the department gave us our own space: the Laboratoire d\u2019apprentissage en th\u00e9rapie du sport<\/em> (LATdS). With this, the program\u2019s students will have access to an exclusive place to study, perfect the techniques learned in class and much more, all under the caring eyes of a lab assistant.<\/p>\n

However, as it is brand new, it is also bland. Hence our missive; we would like to call upon you all to help us improve our lab. We are looking at gathering material donations of anything you do not need anymore. We will therefore allow a second life to anything you feel can help us in our journey. We are thinking anatomy and AT books, anatomical models, posters, furniture, etc.<\/p>\n
