To Our Members,<\/em><\/p>\n

Things have been moving fast since the beginning of 2025 and we are excited to provide you all with several updates. During the last newsletter, a message from a member was transmitted to the membership instead of the usual president\u2019s communication. I want to go over a few points and build off of this last letter. The board has taken both the letter and the several returns from membership into consideration and we seized the opportunity to try to innovate and attempt to move things forward in a positive way. We have presented a new format for a social gathering and recognition event that will take on May 2nd of this year.<\/p>\n

In order to have a strong athletic therapy community in Quebec, these gatherings and opportunities to exchange between members are crucial. Integrating and recognizing the young graduates and newcomers into the profession is an important step in their careers. The entire board was unanimous at acknowledging the importance of helping the ATs of tomorrow receive a proper welcome and an opportunity to meet the rest of the membership. Needless to say, emphasizing the graduates should not come at a detriment of those who have been an integral part of keeping our profession shining through the years. The event will therefore also provide an opportunity to recognize the milestones of each and everyone. We hope to see you all there.<\/p>\n

We have also shared a joint agreement with the Coll\u00e8ge des m\u00e9decins du Qu\u00e9bec<\/em> (CMQ) for our recognition in handling concussions. An updated INESSS document has also been updated to the new reality. We encourage all of you to look into these documents and we hope to provide you all with more updates soon.<\/p>\n

On November 20, Sergio Velasquez Ovalle, athletic therapist and CTSQ member, participated in a job fair at Coll\u00e8ge Fran\u00e7ais in Longueuil, where he works. We would like to highlight this initiative to promote the profession of athletic therapist and help build a future generation of professionals.<\/p>\n

We want to use this article to share relevant information regarding the practice of return-to-play authorization following a concussion.<\/p>\n

Following the publication of the joint statement, we have created a page on our website to help you better understand this new activity. We encourage all members to take a moment to review it. This page, along with the statement, serves as the two main resources you should rely on if you have any questions.<\/p>\n

Additionally, you will find below key points discussed during the January 17 meeting to enhance your understanding of the topic.<\/p>\n

Interpretation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the two resources mentioned above, we recognize that not everything is clearly defined\u2014this is normal for activities of this nature. A certain degree of interpretation is often necessary to adapt to real-world situations while still adhering to the original guidelines. As a result, aspects related to continuing education and practice profiles do not yet have clearly established parameters.<\/p>\n

More defined boundaries will likely emerge as this activity is practised, taking into account both successes and mistakes. However, for this to happen, we must remember our responsibility as professionals to report any violations we witness. It is also likely that a member who approaches the CTSQ after making a mistake themselves will be met with understanding\u2014especially if our collective goal is to learn and grow from these situations. Therefore, we should not hesitate to take initiative to ensure, above all, the safety of our patients and our professional integrity.<\/p>\n

Mandatory Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even before the publication of the joint statement, recognized protocols emphasized the need for a medical evaluation when a concussion occurred or was suspected. This requirement should not be new to athletic therapists, despite some of the feedback received. It is important to remember that in Qu\u00e9bec, only doctors and, in some cases, nurse practitioners (IPS) are authorized to make a medical diagnosis. No other profession can diagnose a concussion. Keep in mind that physiotherapists are not recognized either as outlined in their own joint statement. Lastly, please note that we are working on a second phase of this project to further enhance the activity based on our initial experiences.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An Activity Not Accessible to Everyone<\/strong><\/p>\n

The key takeaway is that not all athletic therapists can engage in this authorized activity.
\nAs outlined in the previously mentioned resources, an athletic therapist wishing to practise this activity must have \u201ca practice profile that regularly exposes them to concussion management.\u201d This profile is directly influenced by the nature of the therapist\u2019s work and the time spent in practice. Working in the field with sports organizations that have a higher risk of concussions\u2014such as football, hockey, or rugby\u2014will justify an athletic therapist\u2019s participation in this activity. Conversely, a therapist working exclusively in a clinic will not qualify if they only see one concussion case per year.<\/p>\n

As a result, this activity will be more accessible to therapists working on the field. The clinical aspect of concussion management, particularly given the often more complex nature of cases seen in clinics\u2014will be less common.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1739202059059{padding-top: 10px !important;}”]\n
