The requirements for maintaining Certification

This document will focus on the Continuing Education (CE) section of Certification Maintenance (CM).

TIMELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF DOCUMENTS:December 31st

  • Is the new deadline for the submission of the Continuing Education (CE) Summary Form. You will still submit on the 3 year rotation based on the first letter of your last name.

January 31st

  • You will be informed if your Continuing Education Summary Form is being audited, no later than 31 days following the submission deadline of December 31st.

 

March 1st

  • You are required to submit all supporting documentation no later than 30 days from the time you are notified that your Continuing Education Summary Form is being audited.

Note: Failure to meet the above submission timelines will result in your membership being classified as “Maintenance Suspension”. The details of this category, the associated penalty fees, and membership limitations, can be found on the CATA website in the members area under the Certification Maintenance Policy and Procedures.

 

CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) AUDIT SYSTEM

Starting December 31st, 2007 the CATA will be moving to an audit based system for monitoring Continuing Education of its Certified Members. Each Certified Member will be required to submit the Continuing Education Summary Form by December 31st of their submission year. The submission schedule will remain the same. A random sample of 10% of the submitted forms will be selected and those Certified Members will be required to submit all supporting documentation in accordance with the timeline indicated above.

Note: If you attain your certification within the CEU collection period you are required to submit 0.6 CEU’s per month you are certified. Therefore if you were certified in June of 2006, with a last name beginning with a first letter between A-H, you will be require to submit for 18 months (July 2006 through December 2007) at a rate of 0.6/month. Therefore you would need to submit 10.8 CEU’s at the December 31st, 2007 deadline.

CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) CATEGORIESContinuing Education (CE) has been realigned from 11 categories to 5. The new CE Categories are listed below. The details of each sub-category can be found on the CATA website in the members area. Each sub-category is awarded the same number of CEU’s that are indicated in the previous Maintenance of Certification Information Booklet. To summarize, the allotment of CEU’s for a given activity has not changed, only the categories the activities are recorded under has changed.

A – Approved Activities (no maximum)These are activities dealing specifically with the National or Provincial Associations. The sub-categories are:

  1. Leave of Absence
  2. Newly Certified Status
  3. Committee Work
  4. Conferences
  5. National and Provincial Annual General Meetings
  6. Examining

 

B – Approved Professional Development (No maximum)

These are activities approved by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. The sub-categories are:

  1. CATA Approved Courses
  2. Athletic Therapy Today Quizzes
  3. Teaching
  4. Publications or Textbooks
  5. Research Consultant or Thesis Advisor
  6. Professional Supervision
  7. Clinic/Field Work
  8. Assuming a new position in Athletic Therapy

C – Post-Certification Academic Programs / Coursework (no maximum)

These are courses completed at a post secondary institution, which are related to the field of Athletic Therapy. The sub-categories are:

  1. Full Time
  2. Part Time

D – Emergency Cardiac Care (6.5 CEU’s maximum)

The sub-categories are:

1. CPR, level HCP

2. First Responder

E – Non-Approved Programming / Special Consideration (14 CEU’s maximum)

This section is for those activities which further advance your education as an Athletic Therapist, but do not fall into the categories listed above. The sub-categories are:

1. Non-Approved CE courses/Workshops

2. Special Consideration
